Yameen's supporters protest in front of prison

Supporters from opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Peoples National Congress (PNC) protested in front of Male' Prison on Friday night.

PPM's leader former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom is currently being held at the Male' Prison after being convicted on money laundering charges on Thursday.

Yameen's legal team earlier on Friday said President Yameen was being held in 'appalling' conditions which was not fit for a former president of the country.

PPM and PNC held a joint council meeting on Friday to discuss their concerns, and called on party members to come out and protest against the 'mistreatment'. A number of supporters gathered in front of the jail following the call later the same night, and called to free President Yameen and jail senior government officials.

The council had also called on party members to protest in front of the residence of Home Minister Imran Abdulla.
