Parliament approves three new members for Broadcom

The Parliament on Tuesday approved to appoint Mariyam Waheeda, Ali Yusuf and Ahmed Gais to the Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom).

While four seats on the commission were vacant, a vote was taken during Tuesday's parliament sitting on the nominations made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the two seats that were vacated following the resignation of commission members Ismail Sofwan and Hassan Nabaah.

President Solih nominated Sangu TV's presenter Shifla Ibrahim, main-ruling MDP's activist Ahmed Gais and journalist Ali Yusuf for the seats.

Although both the parliament committee on independent institutions and President Solih ranked Shifla on top, 49 members voted against Shifla, with only seven members voting in her favour. One member abstained from voting.

All members were in agreement to appoint Mariyam Waheeda, Gais and Ali Yusuf in the separate votes taken.

While President Solih has nominated three names to replace the former Vice President of Broadcom Fathmath Zaina, the committee did not forward any names to the parliament floor after vetting the candidates. Instead, the committee will be advising the president to send in new nominations. The decision was passed with the approval of all 66 members who took part in the vote.
