Two injured after lightning strikes local fishing vessel

Two people were injured after lightning struck a local fishing boat early Tuesday morning.

Two crewmembers of the fishing boat named 'Guruva' carrying 13 people were injured when the boat was struck by lightning near Maarandhoo island in Ga. atoll. The police received reports of the incident around 0050 hrs. The two injured people were taken to Ga. Kolamaafushi Health Centre for treatment.

Speaking to AVAS, a council member of Ga. Kolamaafushi Ibrahim Waheed said Ahmed Saleem and Aneed Moosa sustained injuries during the incident. Saleem suffered a deep cut near his ears while Aneed had trouble breathing. Both have been discharged from the health centre following treatment, said Ibrahim.

The owner of the fishing vessel said the damages received to the boat exceed over MVR1 million. It has been reported that all electrical items on the vessel and the wheelhouse of the boat were damaged, and the frame of the dhoni itself was cracked in the incident. The boat has been towed to Ga. Kolamaafushi by the police following the incident.
