Number of Council Seats Based on Population by Dec 15

Elections Commission has revealed that the number of councillors to be appointed to each island and city council were based on population registered at each island by December 15th.

According to local council laws, five councillors must be elected to councils of islands that have a population of less than 3000. If the population exceeds 3000, seven councillors will be elected.

Elections Commission on Monday said the number of seats allocated to each council was decided based on the population of each island and city by December 15. The decision was made at the commission's 542nd General Assembly, said EC.

The commission earlier revealed that a total of 980 officials will be elected to island, atoll and city councils in the upcoming 2020 local council election.

These include 744 island councillors, 179 island council presidents, 18 atoll councillors, 36 city councillors and 3 mayors. 33% of the councils will be occupied by women as per recent amendments to the Decentralization Act.

The 2020 local council election is slated for April 4.
