Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will be holding their primary on 31 January 2020 to determine the candidates who will represent the party in the upcoming local council elections.
According to the party charters, candidates who will run in any election on party tickets will be determined through a party primary. On Thursday, MDP revealed the party's timeline for their upcoming primary ahead of the council elections slated for April next year.
MDP, who won the majority of seats in the last council elections, revealed that submission will be opened for candidates interested in contesting in the primary on 30 December. According to MDP's timeline, the deadline for applying is 31 January 2020
The main-ruling party further revealed that the voters list for the primary will be publicized and three days will be granted to lodge any complaints regarding the list. As per the timeline, a final voters' list will be publicized on15 January.
While MDP is preparing to hold its primary on 31 January, the party said only members who are registered to the party by 31 December will be eligible to contest and vote in the primary.
980 councillors will be elected in the local council elections. 33% of seats on the councils will be reserved for women as per recent amendments to the Decentralization Act.
