Conflicts settled and prisoners became obedient

The conflicts that occurred in the prisons within the past week have been settled, the prisoners have calmed down and become obedient, said Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz.

Munaz said in a news conference held on Wednesday that the conflict arose when a prisoner assaulted a nurse and a prison officer with chilli-paste (lonumirus) when they entered a cell to provide medicine to a prisoner. The prisoners in other cells also started the assault and it frequented leading it to happen in the Male’ Prison as well.

To address the issue, they have met with the prisoners, listen to their concerns and had counselled them. Even though it took some time to calm the situation, now the prisoners have become obedient, said Munaz. He further said that it had been 12 hours since there is no conflict in the prisons.

“The current government’s policy is to move forward by advising people compassionately and we maintained our behavior in that manner,” said Munaz.

There has been heavy criticism toward the Ministry of Home Affairs, Maldives Correctional Services and Munaz with regard to the prison conflicts. The relevant authorities and Corrections had issued conflicting statements, besides there are some conflicts in the information provided by Munaz on Wednesday’s news conference.
