Jumhoory Party (JP) primary have been slated for February 12, in order to award party tickets to elect candidates for the upcoming local council election.
JP stated on Thursday that those interested to contest for party tickets in the primary on the impending council elections and membership in the Women’s Development Committees will be able to submit their applications from the 6th of January to 8:20 PM on February 5.
The party revealed their decision to contest for all the seats of Women’s Development Committees in the council elections, further adding that the primary is slated for the 12th of February.
While JP primary has been scheduled to take place on February 12, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primaries have been slated for the 31 of January. Opposition coalition's PPM have also decided to proceed with primaries, though the date of initiation has not yet been revealed.
While 980 councillors will be elected in the upcoming elections on the 4th of April, 929 will be contending for seats on the Women's Development Committees. This is the first time councillors will be elected in the elections at such a large scale.
