Seven councillors to be appointed to 14 island councils

The Elections Commission (EC) has revealed that seven councillors will be elected to 14 island councils in the upcoming local council election slated for April 4.

The commission publicized the population of all inhabited islands upto December 15, 2019 and the number of councillors to be elected to each island based on the island population. According to the law, five councillors will be elected to each island with a population of less than 3000. Seven councillors will be elected to islands of which the population exceeds 3000.

By December 15, 2019, a total of 14 islands had a population that exceeded 3000 people. Therefore, 7 councillors will be elected to the island councils of these islands. A total of 98 councillors will be elected from these 14 islands.

The islands and their populations are as follows:

Five councillors will be elected to the island councils of 164 islands, as their population does not exceed 3000. However, an equal number of five people will be elected to Women Development Committees of all islands.

18 councillors will be elected to the council of the capital city, Male'. The current population of Male' city is 75302. While 12 councillors will be elected to Addu City, the city has a population of 34217. Six councillors will be elected to Fuvahmulah City council, with an island population of 14064 people.

Six councillors will be elected to the council of recently declared city, Kulhudhuffushi. The island was designated as a city on January 1 this year.
