A team comprised of senior officials from main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have departed to Ha. and Hdh. atoll on a campaign trail ahead of the upcoming local council election.
The team is headed by Speaker of the parliament and former president of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed.
Speaking to the media on the trip, Speaker Nasheed said the party is undertaking the trip in preparation for the upcoming local council election to meet the maximum number of citizens in the two atolls and discuss development projects.
During the trip, discussions will be conducted to formulate a programme on how to utilize the financial independence newly-granted to local councils, and on maximising employment opportunities through projects undertaken by island councils, said Nasheed.
"We can win the [local council] election. While we are traveling to ensure success in the election, we will also work to ensure the councils operate smoothly, and that more employment opportunities are granted through projects," said Nasheed.
The final stop of the trail will be newly-designated city, Kulhudhuffushi, said Nasheed, adding that a large conference will be held in the city where the councillors, businessmen, resort employees, fishermen, and guest house operators will be taking part.
MDP primaries to elect candidates to represent the party in the council elections will be held on January 31st. The local council election is slated for April 4th.
