Condition of Maldivians in Wuhan city being closely monitored - Foreign Ministry

Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed that they are closely monitoring the condition of Maldivians in Wuhan, China where the Coronavirus is spreading rapidly.

When questioned by AVAS, an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said contact has been established with all Maldivians in the city.

"We are closely monitoring Maldivians [in Wuhan]. All are safe and healthy," said the official.

Maldives China Trade and Agricultural Organization have revealed that six Maldivians are currently in Wuhan City, which is currently under quarantine due to the virus. A tweet published by the organization said a 1.5-year-old child and six Maldivians are in the city, and all are healthy. The organization requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Maldivian Embassy in China to check up on the Maldivian citizens.

With the outbreak of Coronavirus, Wuhan city has been placed under quarantine according to the guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO). The Chinese government has barred 11 million residents from leaving the city and using public transportation until the outbreak is under control.

Although little is known about the virus, human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus has been confirmed in China. Similar to SARS, Chinese authorities said 571 cases from 13 provinces of the country has been recorded thus far and 17 people have died from the virus during the current outbreak.
