Application open for local council election

Election Commission of the Maldives (EC) has opened application for the local council election.

EC's Vice President Ahmed Akram during a ceremony held Tuesday night announced that application is open for local council election for the posts of councillors as well from 4 February until 20 February. Those interested in applying for Women's Development Committees is February 24.

The election for councillors as well as Women’s Development Committee members is slated for 4 April, and this is the first time both the elections are to be held on the same date.

Akram said it is anticipated 6000 candidates will contend in the local council election and election for Women’s Development Committee members. This is the first time such a large number of candidates will contest in an election of the Maldives.

As per the voters' list publicized by EC, there are 269,562 eligible voters for this election. 373 complaints were submitted regarding the voters' list, and all complaints will be taken into account and responded to within three days, said Akram.

“In Sha Allah within the upcoming three days, we will attend to all the complaints and publicise voters list again. Application for re-registration will be opened on 13 February”, said Akram.
