Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has revealed that they have not yet decided to sell land from Phase II of reclaimed suburb, Hulhumale'.
HDC's statement comes while the Managing Director of the corporation Suhail Ahmed had revealed to AVAS that they were preparing to open land in Hulhumale Phase II for purchase.
Speaking with AVAS, Suhail Ahmed stated that land will be leased from Phase II very soon. The company's board has approved the proposition, said Suhail.
While the revelation prompted the public's criticism towards HDC, a statement released by HDC on Tuesday said the board has not yet decided on opening up land for purchase.
Noting that Hulhumale' is being developed under a specific masterplan, the statement said land will be leased from Hulhumale for residential, commercial, industrial and community needs. The largest area of land will be allocated for social and affordable housing projects, said HDC.
240 hectares of land were reclaimed in Hulhumale' in 2017 during the tenure of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
While land was reclaimed in Hulhumale Phase II even previously, the then-government attempted to sell off 1000 sqft plots of land for MVR 400,000 just ahead of the 2018 presidential election. However, the efforts were halted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
