Maldives confirms two new cases of COVID-19; total climbs to six

Two new cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the Maldives, bringing the total number of infected cases to 6.

A spokesperson from the government, Mabrook Abdul Azeez during a press briefing held Monday night revealed that two additional individuals at Kuredu Island Resort has tested positive for the virus. Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed that the two new cases were detected in two expatriate employees at the resort.

The first two cases detected in the Maldives were of two other expatriates employed at the resort, who had contracted the virus after coming in contact with an infected Italian tourist. The tourist had tested positive for the virus upon return to his country following his holiday.

Two Italian tourists at Sandies Bathala Resort have also tested positive for the virus. Both islands have been placed on lockdown, and entry and exit from the island has been indefinitely restricted.

Mabrook further revealed that a total of 90 individuals have been placed in isolation, out of which 69 people are at Kuredu Resort. The remaining people are isolated at their current locations, said Mabrook.
