COVID-19: Govt commences work to clean, disinfect Maafushi Prison

The government has commenced work to clean and disinfect Maafushi Prison amid the novel coronavirus that is escalating across the globe which has now been detected in the Maldives as well.

Maldives Correctional Services has said on Saturday, as a cautionary measure they have begun to clean and disinfect Maafushi Prison on Saturday.

Corrections said prison cells, bathrooms, corridors and the main areas would be cleaned and disinfected.

Besides, information on coronavirus will be provided to the inmates.

While ten people have been detected in the Maldives infected with the virus, all of them are foreigners. Subsequently, the government has declared a public health emergency for 30 days for the first time in the Maldives, on Thursday.

For the safety of the inmates’ family visits has been suspended.

Moreover, sending clothes to the inmates from the families is also suspended; however, family phone calls is to be increased for family bonding of the inmates.

Furthermore, it has been decided not to take inmates for court hearings, if they are having colds.
