Maldives President, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday addressed the nation following the detection of a positive case of COVID-19 in capital Male'.
The president appeared to be visibly distressed and emotional while delivering the address. In his remarks, the president urged all citizens to assist each other during this trying time, and requested everyone to be kind and empathetic towards one another. He pleaded with the nation to prioritize the safety of everyone in the community, and requested the public cooperate with the authorities.
The president assured that the government will continue to do what is necessary to contain the spread of the virus. He further said an adequate supply of food and drink and other necessities are available in the Maldives, and that the citizens will not face food shortages.
21 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives thus far. The first case of community transmission was detected in Male' city on Wednesday. The city is currently on a 24-hour lockdown.
