Authorities have extended the lockdown imposed on the Greater Male' area for an additional 14 days.
Male' region was initially placed on lockdown on March 15 for two days after the detection of the first local transmission case of COVID-19 in the capital. Movement in and out of Male', Hulhumale', Villimale, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi was restricted and no persons were allowed on the streets. Public transport was also suspended. The lockdown was extended for two weeks on March 17.
A directive issued by the Director General of Public Health on Wednesday said the lockdown imposed on Male' area will be in effect for an additional 14 days.
The total number of COVID-19 cases identified in the Maldives has now reached 256. Positive cases have also been identified in Ha. Uligam, K. Thulusdhoo, Sh. Narudhoo and Sh. Milandhoo in addition to Male' and local resorts. Inter-island travel has also been suspended indefinitely.
