Red Crescent opens relief fund to assist vulnerable expats

Maldives Red Crescent has opened a relief fund to assist expatriates who are in vulnerable condition due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Maldives Red Crescent has been providing essential support such as meal packs, staples and grocery supplies, and providing hygiene kits to migrants living in quarantine and isolation facilities and other temporary shelters owing to COVID-19.

The NGO has been assisting more than 1000 expatriates residing in 23 expatriate dormitories that are being monitored by the police, and those expatriates that are placed in quarantine and isolation facilities.

Red Crescent’s Chairman Ali Nasheed said the purpose of the fund opened by the organisation on the May 1 is to support migrants facing the socioeconomic impacts of the outbreak of COVID19 in the Maldives. The fund has collected over MVR 100,000 over the past three days, said Ali.

Donations can be transferred to the “COVID-19 Expatriate Relief Fund” via Maldives Red Crescent’s website.
