An emergency motion has been submitted to parliament on the issue of adverse weather conditions causing damages to the households and public property.
MP Mohamed Nihadh representing Feydhoo constituency of Addu City submitted the motion to the parliament on Monday. The parliament accepted the emergency motion, and it has been passed for debate with the vote of 44 members. No member voted against it.
Addu City is one of the areas most severely affected by the bad weather currently being experienced across Maldives. Over 600 households have reported damages caused by fierce weather conditions.
Submitting the motion to the parliament, Nihadh said climate emergency cannot be taken as a ‘joke’, and that he calls for immediate action to mitigate the impact and to provide assistance for the affected families.
