Jail officers, inmates being tested for COVID-19

Jail officers and inmates at Male' Prison are being tested for COVID-19.

An ESG Officer working at Male' Prison tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week. Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu said the Health Protection Agency (HPA) is currently collecting samples from inmates and jail officers for testing. Adequate precautionary measures to ensure the safety of inmates and employees are ongoing, the commissioner confirmed.

Random testing for COVID-19 was carried out at the prison a few weeks earlier. However, all samples had come back negative at that time.

2,203 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives thus far. While 8 fatalities have been recorded, the number of active cases is 387, with over 1800 recoveries.
