200 undocumented Bangladeshi nationals repatriated

200 undocumented Bangladeshi nationals residing in the Maldives were repatriated on Saturday.

National carrier, Maldivian said an aircraft from its fleet traveled to Dhaka, Bangladesh carrying 200 Banladeshi nationals. The repatriation arrangements are being made jointly by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Maldives government has been working with the Bangladesh government to repatriate expatriates in the Maldives amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 3000 expatriates have been repatriated from the Maldives to date.

While the Maldives has recorded 2,617 positive cases of COVID-19, the figure includes a large number of Bangladeshi nationals. Three Bangladeshi nationals are among the 13 people that passed away in the country due to the illness.
