COVID-19: Dhuvaafaru island placed on lockdown

Dhuvaafaru island in Raa atoll has been placed on lockdown after a family that was recently released from home quarantine tested positive for COVID-19.

A couple and their child who travelled to Dhuvaafaru on June 19th were placed in home quarantine for 14 days, and initially tested negative for COVID-19 upon completion of the quarantine duration. They were released from home quarantine after their negative test result. However, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) later revealed the family was positive for COVID-19.

By that time, the family had already been in contact with several individuals from the island. While contact tracing is now ongoing, the island is now on HPA’s monitoring status and entry and exit from the island has been temporarily prohibited.

The Maldives has recorded 2,664 positive cases of COVID-19 thus far. The island nation recently lifted several strict precautionary measures, and the number of positive cases are on the rise once again.
