Opposition coalition 'will not become a puppet', says dept. leader

Vice President of opposing Peoples’ National Congress (PNC) Adam Shareef Umar has stated that the progressive coalition is a puppet to no country. His statement comes after main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group leader, MP Ali Azim claimed the opposition’s activities are funded by China.

Shareef said the opposition coalition would not jeorpadise the country’s independence and sovereignty, and will never become a ‘puppet’ of a foreign country. He added that the opposition would never call for foreign military to attack Maldives, nor would they involve other countries in its internal affairs.

MP Azim’s comments were in response to a social media campaign being carried out by by the opposition named ‘India Out’. Azim said the opposition were attempting to incite hatred against India in the hearts of Maldivians as they can clearly see the assistance being provided to the Maldives by India, and its direct benefits reaching the Maldivian people.
