Four arrested with alcohol in capital Male'

Four people have been arrested in capital Male’ with a large amount of beer and alcohol in two operations conducted by the police.

Maldives Police Service said the police carried out an operation on September 13, and arrested three people unloading goods from a pickup truck. 511 cans of beer were discovered upon searching the goods loaded on the vehicle, said the police. Among those arrested were two local men and a Bangladeshi national.

The second operation was carried out on September 15, in which a van was stopped in Male’ city’s industrial zone. 116 bottles of alcohol were found in the van, and a man was arrested.

The sale of alcohol is prohibited in inhabited islands as the consumption of alcohol is forbidden in Islam. Although liquor is imported to the Maldives for tourist resorts it is often diverted and sold in inhabited islands
