US Secretary of State arrives in the Maldives

The United State's Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo has arrived in the Maldives.

Pompeo was greeted at Velana International Airport by Maldives' Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid. He paid a courtesy call on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih upon arrival in Male'. A joint press conference will be held by the President and the US State Secretary to brief the media on the points of discussion later this evening.

Secretary Pompeo's visit is the highest-level visit by a US official to the Maldives since 1992. Former Secretary of State, James Baker visited the Maldives in July, 1992.

Secretary Pompeo visited India and Sri Lanka prior to the stop in Maldives. The regional visit of the US Secretary of State ahead of the country's presidential election will be concluded in Indonesia.
