The Maldives has recorded 32,241 tourist arrivals during the current month, statistics have shown. This is the most number of tourists to have visited the Maldives in one month since the Maldives reopened its borders to tourists in July. The tourism dependent archipelago closed its borders to tourists earlier in March as a precautionary measure against the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Statistics by the Tourism Ministry showed that 32,241 tourists visited the Maldives this month until November 28th. Most number of tourists arrived from Russia, with 16,285 arrivals recorded from the country. This corresponds to 22.4 percent of total arrivals.
The second-most number of tourists arrived from India, with 8,690 tourists visiting the country since July. The United Kingdom came third with 5,312 arrivals, followed by the United States from which 2,212 arrivals were recorded.
1,752 tourists visited the Maldives in July when the tourism-dependent archipelago first reopened its doors to tourists. The number increased to 7,628 in August and 9,538 tourists visited the Maldives in September. The figure more than doubled in October with 21,515 tourist arrivals.
The total number of tourists that have visited the Maldives since the beginning of the year is 455,470, out of which 382,760 tourists visited prior to the border closure. The number of arrivals recorded since border reopening is at 72,623.
