Over 31,000 tourist beds now in operation

The Tourism Ministry has stated that over 31,000 tourist beds have been brought back into operation since the Maldives reopened its borders in July.

The Maldives closed its borders to tourists back in March as a precautionary measure against COVID-19. While most resorts and all guest houses ceased operation with the development, many resorts and guest houses have now reopened and are providing tourism services. Resorts were allowed to reopen in July while guest houses received the green light to resume operation in October.

The Tourism Ministry said 133 resorts have resumed operation, and that 31,388 tourist beds in 15,689 rooms are now active. According to statistics, tourist hotels established at two yacht marinas, The Marina at Crossroads Maldives and Hideaway Beach Resort Spa at Dhunikolhu Island, have also recommenced operation. The number of beds at the facilities is 280. Additionally, five tourist hotels with 602 beds, 2,330 beds in 123 liveaboards are also in operation.

The latest figures show that 132 guest houses, which accommodates 2,568 tourist beds, have reopened since October 15.

Over 150 resorts and 600 guest houses were being operated in the Maldives prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. The total number of beds available at the facilities exceeded 500,000.
