New members elected to Maldives Media Council

Members have been elected to the Maldives Media Council.

Six members who represent the media field, and six members from the public were elected to the council during the election held Saturday.

The members elected to the council from among local medias are Ali Hussain from Public Service Media, Hussain Shafeeq from Thiladhun, Muizzu Ibrahim from Mihaaru, Adam Nawaz from Vaguthu, Adam Nazeer from Hathaavees Online, Hassan Shakir from Asdhan’di and Shahubaan Fahmy from Sangu TV.

The members elected from among the public are Fathmath Ahmed, Anwar Ibrahim, Ibrahim Fauzy, Ahmed Moosa, Shafaa’ath Habeeb and Mohamed Shafaau Hassan.

A total of 14 members sit on the media council. The tenure of two members will expire within the upcoming year. Therefore, a bi-election will be held sometime next year.

While new members have been elected to the media council, the government has been entertaining the idea to merge the media council with the Maldives Broadcasting Commission. The proposition has been approved by the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions, and the Attorney General’s Office has prepared the bill on merging the council and the commission. The bill will be presented to the Parliament early next year.
