A record number of traffic movements was registered at Maldives’ main international airport, Velana International Airport (VIA) on December 5.
The Maldives closed its borders to tourists on March 27 as a precautionary measure against COVID-19. The number of flight movements and arrivals have been steadily increasing since the archipelago reopened its borders in July.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) which manages VIA said the most number of flight movements since border reopening was recorded on December 5th with 352 traffic movements. The most number of arrivals were also recorded on December 5th with 3,100 arrivals.
Many popular airlines have resumed operation to the Maldives since border reopening. Special schedule charter flights are also frequently operating to the Maldives.
The latest statistics released by the Tourism Ministry shows that 82,902 tourist arrivals have been recorded since border reopening until December 5. While 465,749 arrivals have been recorded since the beginning of the year, the government aims to host 500,000 tourists before the end of the year, with 100,000 arrivals since border reopening.
