Maldives to welcome 100,000th tourist since border reopening

The Maldives will host on Saturday, its 100,000th tourist to visit the archipelago since border reopening.

The Maldives closed its borders to tourists earlier in March as a precautionary measure against the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the initial number of daily arrivals had remained low during the first days after reopening in July, the numbers have been picking up steadily since then, with a significant amount of tourists visiting from European nations.

The Tourism Ministry previously anticipated that the archipelago will receive its 100,000th tourist since border reopening later this month around December 25th. However, after a large influx of arrivals, the government now expects the 100,000th tourist to arrive on Saturday.

In a tweet published by Tourism Minister, Abdulla Mausoom, he announced that Saturday, the 12th of December, 2020 would be a historical day. The one hundred thousandth tourist since border reopening will arrive on Saturday morning, and the occasion marks a significant milestone, said the minister.
