Maldives welcomes 100,000th tourist since border reopening

The Maldives has welcomed its 100,000th tourist since border reopening.

The tourism-dependent archipelago closed its borders to tourists earlier in March as a precautionary measure against COVID-19. The number of tourists visiting the Maldives has been increasing steadily since border reopening in July.

The Tourism Ministry previously anticipated that the archipelago will receive its 100,000th tourist since border reopening later this month around December 25th. However, after a large influx of arrivals, the Maldives welcomed its 100,000th tourist on Saturday.

A special ceremony was held at the country’s main international airport, Velana International Airport (VIA) to welcome the 100,000th tourist. The visitor, a Switzerland national named Jasmine, arrived in the Maldives with her partner via Emirates Airline. They will be spending their two-week holiday in the Maldives at Emboodhoo Village.

Speaking to the press, Ms. Jasmine said she is happy to be in the Maldives, and that the Maldives is the safest destination.
