Guest houses reopen in Greater Male' Region

Several guest houses in the Greater Male’ Area have reopened after nine months.

The Maldives closed its borders to tourists earlier in March as a precautionary measure against COVID-19, and all guest houses and resorts as well as other tourism facilities were closed. 82 guest houses with 2,342 tourist beds were in operation in the Greater Male' Region prior to the closure.

While resorts restarted operation in July, guesthouses except those in the Greater Male’ area were permitted to resume operation in OCtober.

The Maldives government gave permission for guest houses in the Greater Male’ Area to reopen last week. Since then, 15 guest houses have been reopened, and more are expected to reopen during the upcoming week. The Tourism Ministry said it expects over 80 tourism facilities to resume operation within the week.

A total of 152 guest houses across 27 islands in the Maldives have resumed operation, which provided a total of 3,016 tourist beds.
