Over 40,000 tourists visited the Maldives during the first two weeks of 2021.
Statistics released by the Tourism Ministry show that 20,612 tourists visited the archipelago during the first week of the year. The number increased to 40,426 by the end of the second week.
During this period, the most number of tourists arrived from Russia. 10,002 arrivals were recorded from Russia. The second most number of tourists arrived from India with 5,727 arrivals. Following behind was Ukraine and Kazakhstan, with 3,472 and 2,034 tourist arrivals respectively. The rest of the arrivals were from Romania, France, Germany, USA and Switzerland.
While 2,005 tourist arrivals were registered on New Year’s Day, 4,160 tourists arrived the following day. The number of arrivals fluctuated between 2,000 and 4,000 for the next few days.
555,399 tourists visited the Maldives in 2020. The government aims to host 1.5 million tourists during the current year.
