Over 99,000 tourist arrivals thus far this year

Over 99,000 tourists have visited the Maldives thus far this year.

Statistics shared by the Tourism Ministry show that 92,103 tourists visited the Maldives in January. While January is considered a peak month in tourist arrivals, the number of arrivals recorded in January this year is a 47 percent decline from the number of tourists who visited the archipelago during the same period in 2020. 173, 874 tourist arrivals were recorded in January 2020.

The total number of tourist arrivals have increased to 99,397 within the first four days of February. While 15,444 tourists visited the Maldives within the first four days of the month last year, this year’s number is at 7,294.

An average of 2,971 daily tourist arrivals were recorded last month, with an average stay duration of 9.2 days. The most number of arrivals were recorded from Russia, with 22,365 tourists. Russian tourists account for 22.5 percent of arrivals. The second-most number of arrivals were recorded from India with 20,933 arrivals from the neighbouring nation, and accounts for 21.1 percent of arrivals.

The most number of arrivals arrived in the Maldives via Emirates airlines. 20,741 tourists traveled to the Maldives via Emirates while 13,542 tourists traveled via Qatar Airways. 11,987 arrivals via IndiGo and 11,687 via GoAir were also recorded.

Last year, the Maldives hosted 555,494 tourists. The government aims to host one million tourists this year.
