Record number of tourist arrivals on Sunday

A record number of tourists arrived in the Maldives on Sunday.

The Maldives closed its borders to tourists in March 2020 as a precautionary measure against COVID-19, and reopened its borders on July 15, 2020.

According to the Tourism Ministry, the most number of daily tourist arrivals since border reopening was recorded on Sunday, with 5,100 arrivals. The second-most number of arrivals were recorded earlier on January 3rd with 4,195 arrivals.

The number of airlines operating to the Maldives are also increasing. According to statistics, 26 airlines currently operate to the Maldives. The most recent airline to commence operation to the Maldives is Poland’s national airline. The demand from the Poland market has been increasing over the past months. While LOT Polish Airline has now commenced charter flights to the Maldives, the first flight between Poland and Maldives carried 294 passengers. Maldives Airports Company Limited, which operates Maldives’ main international airport said the charter flights will be operated between the two countries until the end of March, and each flight is expected to carry approximately 250 passengers.

Tourism Ministry’s statistics show that 159,126 tourists have arrived in the Maldives thus far this month by February 20th. The most number of arrivals are from India, with 62,960 arrivals. The second-most number of tourists arrived from Russia, with 61,387 arrivals.
