Japan provides MVR 15 mln assistance to vaccine program

The Japanese government has extended a financial assistance of MVR 15 million to assist the Maldives in its COVID-19 vaccine program.

The funds which were given to the Maldives through UNICEF will be utilized to increase the Cold Chain Equipment (CCE) for COVID-19 vaccine storage. The capacity of health officials as well as government staff, including technicians with regard to CCE will be strengthened by using the funds.

The Japanese government has been very generous in providing assistance to the Maldives in its efforts to counter COVID-19. The country has previously donated grant assistances amounting to USD 7.5 million as well as an emergency support loan of USD 47.5 million to the Maldives government. The Japanese Embassy in the Maldives said the most recent donation would further lighten the burden of Maldives’ free vaccine program.
