Damage to Hoarafushi airport as thunderstorms batter northern atolls

Wave surges due to bad weather have caused numerous damage to Hoarafushi Airport.

The Managing Director of Regional Airports Company, Mohamed Rizvi said flight operation to Hoarafushi Airport has been temporarily suspended due to swell waves affecting the airport's runway and the highway leading to the airport. Fights will be resumed as soon as the weather improves and both the highway and runway are deemed safe for use, said Rizvi

The terminal of the airport was also damaged in the heavy thunderstorms. A large glass window shattered due to strong winds and the terminal's ceiling was also damaged.

The Meteorology Office has issued a Yellow Alert from Haa Alif atoll to Caavu atoll. MET office said torrential rain with possible flooding, and strong winds up to 30 mph and gusts of 55 mph are expected. Rough seas and sea swells are also expected.
