Monitoring mechanisms activated in Ungoofaaru once again

COVID-19 cases have been identified in R. Ungoofaaru once again, two days after the Health Protection Agency (HPA) lifted its monitoring status from the island.

Ungoofaaru was put under HPA's monitoring earlier in March and then again on May 19. 10 COVID-19 cases are active in Ungoofaaru at this time. Out of these, seven people are those who tested positive after completion of quarantine. Entry and exit from the island has been restricted once again following the identification of the new cases.

Residents of northern atolls usually travel to Ungoofaaru to seek treatment at Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital. Patients seeking treatment at the hospital face several difficulties due to the closure of the island.

According to HPA, monitoring mechanisms are active on 74 islands at this time. This is about 39 percent of all inhabited islands in the Maldives. Curfews are in effect in all 74 islands from 9:00 pm to 04:00 am, and 12-hour curfews are in effect in islands with bigger outbreaks. A 16-hour curfew is in effect in the Greater Male' Region.
