10-year old dies of COVID-19, Maldives' youngest victim

A 10-year old girl passed away due to COVID-19 early Wednesday morning. This is the Maldives' youngest COVID-19 fatality to date.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the girl was brought to state run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital's ER and died while receiving treatment. The girl was not conscious when she was brought to the hospital.

The child's family said there were delays in providing treatment to the child. They noted that the ambulance did not arrive until hours after they called for the service.

While this is the first time in the pandemic that a death of a child has been recorded in the Maldives, a 7-year old with COVID-19 is also on ventilator support at this time. The latest updates provided by HPA said no improvement in the child's condition has been noted thus far.

The Maldives' COVID-19 toll is currently at 170. The archipelago reported eight deaths on June 1.
