A young mother whose baby was delivered eight days ago has passed away from COVID-19.
The 25-year-old woman tested positive for COVID-19 in her island during the last few weeks of her pregnancy and was brought to capital Male' for treatment on May 28 after her condition deteriorated. The baby was delivered via c-section the next day. The Health Protection Agency said the mother was on ventilator support for 15 days before she passed away at the DH11 facility in Dharumavantha Hospital. The baby is currently being treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
This is the Maldives' first maternal death related to COVID-19. The archipelago has reported 69,831 positive cases and 195 deaths to date.
