COVID-19: Active cases drop below 6,000

The number of active cases of COVID-19 has dropped below 16,000.

A recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the Maldives increased the number of active cases during the month of May and was above 16,000 at the end of the month. 1200 to 1500 people were testing positive daily on average during May.

Authorities implemented strict measures to curb the spread of the virus, and the daily figure dropped dramatically. The numbers now remain below 300.

As per the latest figures released by the Health Protection Agency, only 54 people tested positive for the virus from the Greater Male' Region over the past 24 hours. 132 cases were reported from other inhabited islands while 25 cases were reported from resorts.

The current number of active cases is 5,403 across the Maldives, and 66,090 recoveries have been recorded to date. 203 people have succumbed to COVID-19 until now. While 46 patients are hospitalized at this time, 9 of them are admitted at state-run Dharumavantha HOspital's DH11 facility. Out of these, five patients are on ventilator support, and four are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Eight patients are admitted at the Hulhumale' Medical Facility's ICU and five are on ventilator support.
