An advisory committee to offer counsel to the Education Ministry during emergency situations has been established. The committee was formed by the ministry on Wednesday, under the Education Act ratified last November.
21 members from 12 different fields sit on the newly established committee. The sectors are:
- UNICEF Country Office and Education Sector
- Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology
- National Disaster Management Authority
- National Counter-terrorism Center
- Maldives Meteorological Service
- Health Protection Agency
- Ministry of Finance
- Local Government Authority
- Gender Ministry
- Red Crescent
- Maldives National Defense Force
- Maldives Police Service
The Education Ministry said the main purpose of establishing the committee is to ensure the safety and protection of students, in addition to maintaining schools as safe environments. Experts from different fields will work together and provide their technical insight on important matters relevant to the education sector during emergency situations and disasters, the ministry said.
The committee will convene once every month. The first committee meeting was held on Wednesday.
