Police destroy 315 kg of seized drugs

Maldives Police Service has disposed of 315 kg of drugs.

An event was held at Dhoonidhoo on Tuesday to destroy the drugs. Home Minister Imran Abdulla, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed, and senior police officers were present at the event.

The drugs disposed on Tuesday include 215 kg of drugs seized from R. Lhaanbugalin in October and 107 kg of drugs seized over several operations. The street value of the drugs is estimated to be well over MVR 316 million.

The police said an additional 119 kg of drugs seized this month are being tested at the forensics laboratory.

Speaking to the media, Commissioner Mohamed Hameed said the police disposed of 1801 kg of drugs over the past three years. This includes drugs that have been in police custody for over ten years, he said. Upon completing all legal protocol in drug cases, the police give the highest priority to dispose of the drugs at the earliest, the commissioner added.

The commissioner further said the police are aware of 43 areas in the capital city Male' where drug trade occurs. He noted that drug trade is also carried out extensively even in the atolls, adding that people of all ages are involved in the business.
