About 500 people are newly introduced to drugs every year, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has said.
Speaking at a function held to mark the 90th anniversary of the police on Saturday night, CP Hameed said between 400 and 500 people are introduced to drugs for the first time every year. This is a challenge in the fight against drugs, he said, adding that the new types of drugs introduced lure more and more youth toward addiction.
The police have increased the amount of drugs seized under the Strategic Action Plan formulated to tackle the drug issue in the Maldives, said Hameed.
The commissioner further noted that increasing the number of people involved in crimes is a concern. He stressed that important efforts should be made to increase the people's trust in the police.
