Police introduce body-worn cameras

Maldives Police Service has commenced using body-worn cameras.

Body cams were introduced into service at a special ceremony held at Iskandharu Koshi on Sunday. Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed, Home Minister Imran Abdulla, and Climate Change and Technology Minister Aishath Shauna were in attendance at the ceremony.

The police will operate 200 bodycams at this time, in Greater Male' Region and southernmost Addu City.

Speaking at the ceremony, CP Hameed said efforts are ongoing to procure 1,200 additional cameras. In the future, the police will utilize bodycams in all regions of Maldives, he said.

While a special policy has been established on the operation of the cameras, all interaction between the police and civilians will be recorded via the camera. If a video has to be publicized under any circumstance, it will be publicized as per the policy. This will increase public trust in the police, CP Hameed said.
