Nasheed meets with former Sri Lankan President Sirisena

Parliament Speaker and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has met with former President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena.

Speaking regarding Friday's meeting, Nasheed said the former presidents spoke about the difficult situation that the Sri Lankan people face and the need for all political parties of Sri Lanka to have a common vision for a prosperous future.

The Sri Lankan government has tasked Speaker Nasheed with coordinating international relief efforts for Sri Lanka, which is in the midst of a major economic crisis, and political turmoil.

The Office of Sri Lanka's new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's said Nasheed offered to seek foreign assistance to Sri Lanka, which the Prime Minister accepted.

Ranil's appointment as prime minister comes as Sri Lanka's deteriorating economic crisis led to major political unrest. His predecessor, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, resigned on May 9 after the country plunged into deep political turmoil. The situation escalated when pro-government protestors attacked anti-government protesters who had taken to the streets, and the homes and property of government officials and parliamentarians were torched.
