MPL drug operation still ongoing: Customs

Maldives Customs Service has said the joint drug operation launched with Maldives Police Service regarding a large amount of drugs smuggled into the Maldives via sea is still ongoing.

Maldives Police Service earlier on Friday said a container being cleared by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) was being searched on suspicion of it containing drugs.

The Customs on Saturday said in a statement that the operation launched by the Police and Customs is still ongoing. The operation is being conducted as two different types of drugs were found in the shipment, said Customs.

"Details of the operation will be shared as soon as it is concluded," Customs said.

The drugs were reportedly found in a 40-foot container containing tomato paste. Police have reportedly been searching the container for narcotics since early Thursday night. The shipment is believed to have been brought to the Maldives via India.
