Customs seize drugs worth MVR 15 mln

Authorities have seized over 460 grams of drugs from a Brazilian national.

Maldives Customs Service said the drugs were discovered while searching a 29-year-old Brazilian woman's luggage who had arrived in the Maldives by air on November 9. Her luggage was checked due to suspicions.

Customs said the total weight of the drugs seized was 460.4 grams. The street value of the drugs was estimated at MVR 15 million. The suspect and the drugs have now been handed over to police.

This is the 10th time this year that cocaine has been seized while being smuggled into the Maldives. A total of 17 kilograms of cocaine has been seized so far this year.

In a bid to strengthen and enhance efforts to curb the smuggling of drugs, Customs introduced a tactical team of Special Operations earlier in January. The tactical teams are active both in Male' and regional customs.
