JP to abolish party leader post, to appoint president instead

The Jumhooree Party (JP) has decided to abolish the post of party leader and appoint a president.

The change will be made to the party's constitution at the upcoming congress. The congress will also elect members to the JP council. The new council will then decide how the party will proceed with the upcoming presidential election.

A JP official said the party's council received a proposal to amend the party's rules to appoint a president instead of the party leader.

Currently, the JP leader is Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim. He has been the party's leader since its inception.

The official said the party president would be elected from among the candidates who are running for the post along with the current party leader.

The JP is the second-largest party in the ruling coalition. For every presidential election, JP leader Qasim forms a coalition with a candidate. He has contested all but the last presidential election.
