Decline in tourist arrivals in May

The Maldives has seen a decline in tourist visits this May as compared to the same period last year.

The latest statistics from the Tourism Ministry revealed that 32,076 tourists visited the Maldives in the first week of May, representing an 11.7 percent decrease from the 36,333 tourists that visited during the same time last year. Despite this setback, the Maldives has witnessed a 17.5 percent increase in tourist visits overall this year compared to the same period in 2022, with 720,361 tourists arriving so far.

According to the data, the top ten countries contributing to the tourism industry in the Maldives are Russia, India, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, China, the United States, France, Switzerland, and South Korea. However, the data from the Tourism Ministry and Maldives Immigration suggest that the number of Russian tourists is decreasing every month. Despite the decline, Russia still remains the top source market for Maldives tourism.
