Schools resume following midterm break

Schools have resumed following the conclusion of the second term midterm break.

Schools went on break on December 22 and resumed on January 5. The term will end on March 6 and the new academic year is scheduled to begin on April 6.

According to the academic calendar publicized by the Education Ministry, students studied 85 days in the first term. The second term will be 105 days long.

The current academic year kicked off with 96,000 students across the Maldives. While 83,000 students are enrolled at 217 government schools, 13,000 students are enrolled at private institutions.

The Maldives' academic year currently begins in August, a change made by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in 2021. It is a presidential pledge of the current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to revert to the January start, as was the practice in the Maldives in the past. In order to fulfill this pledge, the government has already shifted the 2025 academic year such that the year-end holidays will align with December. Therefore, the academic year will commence in January starting 2026.
